Serbian Geographical Society was established on 7 April 1910 in Belgrade. Its patron was Jovan Cvijić, founder of modern geography in Serbia. It was the first geographical society in Yugoslav countries and the Balkan Peninsula. The Society had two main tasks: research and professional work and popularizing knowledge of geography and related sciences. Society work was interrupted by wars (Balkan wars, First and Second World War), and its work was continued from 16 February 1947 until these days. Along with increasing the number of members of the Society, its activities have multiplied. New depatments and sections were established, field work research was encouraged and diversifield publishing was developed. Today, Serbian Geographical Society has over 1,000 regular and 200 part-time and twenty honorary members. Publications issued by the SGD are "Bulletin", "Globe" and "Land and People“.
