Estimation of the Herbaceous and Woody Plant Biomass from Meteorological and Climatic Data in Burkina Faso
Abstract
Estimating plant biomass in areas with highly contrasting vegetation using satellite indices remains a technological challenge. This study aims to develop models for estimating forage yields based on meteorological data in Burkina Faso. A database was created through spatial interpolation of weather station observations, covering 159 biomass collection points in the field between 2017 and 2019. The multiple regression method, combined with the BIC (Bayesian information criterion), was used to select the most effective models for estimating woody, herbaceous, and total biomass according to climatic domains. The most robust results were obtained in the Sahelian domain, with high explainability (adjusted R² from 0.69 to 0.85) and errors stabilized at around 29%. In contrast, in the Sudanese domain, characterized by highly heterogeneous vegetation, the explainability of the models decreased (adjusted R² from 0.15 to 0.48), although errors remained relatively low (15%). The most relevant climate variables for model development are temperature, number of rainy days, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure. These factors are essential indicators for projecting plant biomass at the national level.
